Today’s “What I’m Drinking” is coming to you from Ms. Jennifer Taglione from Stiletto Sports and The Pink Bubble World.
A few weeks ago I was whining to Mike that I was almost out of coffee. Since we were meeting up for dinner (and he knew I wouldn’t stop whining…), he offered to give me some of his coffee if I promised to review it. Sweat deal for me!
He had every reason to be wary about this negotiation (and to refuse to give me his super expensive gourmet blend to try). See, unlike Mike, I am so not a coffee person.
Okay that’s a lie. I see coffee as a necessity in my life and I love it unconditionally. But that is the problem. I don’t differentiate a good cup from a bad cup. And I rarely take the time to actually savor the flavors. In fact, I’ve always been a “light and sweet” girl, especially with all the delish flavored creamers out now! I like my coffee how I like my alcohol: I don’t want it to taste like it’s main component!
I also happen make the world’s worst cup of coffee. Even with expensive freshly ground beans, I still mess it up. Making coffee is a lot like baking; it’s an exact science. Just a smidge too much and you mess up the whole pot. I have no patience for this, especially first thing in the morning when my eyes are all bleary eyed and I just need caffeine NOW!
Oh, and Mike drinks a pot of coffee a day and I barely drink half a pot. Sometimes all I need is two cups and I’m good to go!
All that being said….
What Mike Gave Me That I’m Drinking:
The Drink: 44th Street Blend, New York Coffee
Type: Ground
Overall Rating: If it wouldn’t make me shake uncontrollably all day, I’d drink a whole pot of it
My Critique:
I drank more than half a pot of the 44th street Blend and with only a touch of sugar; it was that good!
I knew as soon as it started brewing that I was in for a real treat. My whole house was filled with yummy smells, although I wasn’t awake enough to really figure out what they were.
On first sip I was overwhelmed with a rush of scents and flavors. It was like having all of my favorite flavored coffees from Coffee Masters’ 12 Coffees of Christmas rolled into one pot! Sweet, smooth and creamy yet light at the same time.
The website says it is a blend of butterscotch and toffee. I happen to have a bag of Nestle butterscotch morsels laying around so I nibbled on ten one just to compare and that’s exactly what the coffee tasted like! Rich, melt-in-your-mouth, butterscotch coffee! The toffee flavor is much more subtle but definitely gives off nice hints of nuttiness.
Even with all my gushing praise, I do have two gripes. First, the package was ridiculously impossible to upon. I wound up with coffee grinds all over my counter and floor. It should come with a warning “Do Not Attempt To Open In the A.M. Without Prior Cup of Caffeine.” And because the bag was ripped while opening it the first time, I can’t just pour it into my scooper like I usually do. Big mess every day. Not fun.
Second, and this is a really nitpicky gripe, I would just really love some info on why this is called “44th Street Blend.” What about butterscotch and toffee is supposed to make me think of the Broadway District of NYC? Personally I think a flavor like “cherries jubilee” would make me think of jazz bands and bright lights. Neither the bag of coffee nor the website provide much info on the inspiration behind the brews. Which is odd since the company appears to be looking for distributors. Who would want to distribute a product they don’t know anything about?
