What I’m Drinking – 7-Eleven Iced Coffee

by Mike on June 10, 2009 in Coffee Reviews

7-11The Drink: 7-Elven Iced Coffees

Overall Rating: 2 out of 5 cups

I’ve suffered so that you don’t have to. Last week, I tasted the new “coffee” drinks from 7-Eleven. Yes, even 7-Eleven is trying to get into the coffee wars. They’ve always had stale coffees that have been sitting there all day, overly sweet cappuccino like drinks and now they’re offering iced “coffee.” They’re even running a month long marketing promotion and offering the drinks at reduced prices to get our attention. I’m thinking they should use the money they’re spending on their promotions and go back to the drawing board to, I don’t know, make their coffees taste like coffee.

I tried their Mocha iced coffee first. It reminded me a lot of the canned Starbuck’s Doubleshot drinks, just with a lot lower quality flavor. It tasted more like a liquid candy bar than anything I would definite as coffee. In fact, I’m going to go out on a limb and say it didn’t taste like coffee at all.

The other flavor is French Vanilla and it wasn’t much better. It was sweet, easy to drink, but the word coffee really shouldn’t be used on the label.

I’m giving these drinks a rating of 2 coffee cups out of 5. The only reason that they didn’t get a 1 rating is because they were very easy to drink and I’d consider going back in a caffeine emergency.

It wasn’t just the coffee that made me want to leave and think twice about coming back. The dispenser area was a mess and I was afraid to even put my cup down.

Then there was a long line at the register because the lotto machine was broken and was tying up one employee, while the other employee ignored the customers and worked on stocking the floor. I waited long enough where I started to think about just leaving the drink behind and heading down the Starbucks down the street. I probably could’ve gotten a real coffee drink in less time.

My coworker and friend, Lace was going to leave this as a comment, but I thought it was worth adding to the actual blog post, especially since he included a picture of him drinking the 7-Eleven coffee while reading this blog.

Lace Iced Coffee

First off, I’m not coffee guru by far but do enjoy it quite often. I love the iced and blended drinks personally, so this is great for me.

I’ve had quite a few of these lately since the only local store around here is the 7-11 without driving 10 miles. I have to say, I enjoy them. They remind me of Burger King’s BK Joe – almost exactly, which I do love thanks to Extreme John!

You brought up the fact that there isn’t much of a coffee taste at all. In my opinion, there’s a very very mild hint of coffee – which could be good, if you like that, which I do.

I prefer to mix both the french vanilla and mocha flavors without any ice and it usually comes out quite decent. I love the sweetness too, unlike DD’s 2 inches of sugar at the bottom.

For 99 cents, I’ll take it. Anything is better then paying $5 for a cup of joe!

thanks for torturing yourself for your readers and thankfully I will have no reason to go to 7-11 because I am quitting smoking tomorrow and won’t need to buy cigarettes from there anymore.

I would say it was my pleasure, but really it was quite painful. Had my last fast food meal tonight. I feel rejuvenated already, minus the fact that it’s making me feel really drowsy.

I would have to agree to two cup rating is right about where I would rate it too, it’s a good coffee moment saver but thats about it.

How did I miss this? I think this is one of those things that may be store-dependent. Our local 7-11 is run by a coffee-lover, and she makes sure that the coffee is always freshly made and the coffee area is clean and inviting. Back when I was driving my daughter to school every morning, she went so far as to dump half a pot of dark roast when I came in one morning – my favored coffee – and make it fresh because it had been sitting more than half an hour. Course, I’m not sure she would have done that for just anyone. Same with gas station coffee – some places, it’s worth drinking. Others, I wouldn’t drink a cup if they paid me – same chain, same coffee brand, different owners.

I think mine is definitely not run by a coffee lover. I went back on Friday to pick something up and took a peek at the coffee section. It was a complete mess again. Also, there was a mile long line, while the other employee was in the back stocking the freezer.

Hey Daily Shot,
You are so right on it’s own it IS sickenly sweet and doesnt much taste like coffee.

BUT I wanted to let you know, I pour half the cup with regular coffee over ice and then fill it the rest of the way with the Frech Vanilla stuff from the machine. And it’s a million times better :)

Well I have try the seven-Eleven iced coffee and would agree that it does not taste anything like coffee at all!! I have discovered this new brand of iced coffee called Wolfgang Puck Culinary Iced Coffees. Made by renowned chef Wolfgang Puck, these new bottled iced coffee drinks are not only convenient, they have a great taste, are certified organic, and the best part which I could not believed, they were only 120 calories!!!!!! As an iced coffee lover it is good to know that there is a product out there that can satisfy my craving for great tasting iced coffee in a healthier way. For those of you who enjoy iced coffee as I do I would truly recommend this new product. I believe it is sold at most whole foods markets since that’s where I was offered to try it.
