The Drink: Dunkin Donuts Coffee Coolatta
Overall Rating: 2.5 out of 5 coffee cups
Yup, you read that right. I’ve ended my Dunkin Donuts boycott…at least temporarily.
Today, I tried to stop at two different local, independent coffee shops and both were out of business. I was about ready to give up, when I stopped at a gas station to fill up my car. They had a Dunkin Donuts and I needed caffeine. It was like some sort of sign that I should give them a second chance.
I tried the Coffee Coolatta becuase I’ve been hearing a lot about it and it seems like you can’t miss their advertising for it.
It’s a blended coffee drink with milk and sugar. I’d compare it to a mix of a Starbucks Frappuccino and the iced coffee that I got from 7-11 last week. It was too sweet for my tastes, but compared to the 7-11 iced coffee, it had a lot more actual coffee flavor. I would’ve liked more coffee flavor, but it was mostly drinkable until it got to the end. For some reason, I felt the need to get the large and by the time I got down the last quarter it was melted, watered down and really not worth drinking even for the caffeine.
If I was looking for cold coffee drink, I’d probably head down to Starbucks, but the Coffee Coolatta did get the job done in the caffeine department.
As far as the service, the reason I boycotted Dunkin Donuts, it was better. I wouldn’t go as far as to say they were friendly, but it was a major improvement over last time. I’m almost thinking about going back to review some of their other coffees. We’ll have to see.
The real moral of the story is make sure you go out and support your local coffee shops. If you don’t, you’re likely to end up finding empty storefronts like I did today.

soo true – we’ve lost a couple of long-time coffee shops here in town over the last year. On the DD front, glad the service was a little better – sorry you picked the Coolatta – definitely NOT my favorite Dunkins drink – but then, I drink my coffee with either no sugar or just a few grains. Never could stand the syrupy taste of the coffee Coolatta. On the flip side, I -do- like their pina coolatta.
I do have a recipe for making your own Coolatta at home on the blog, though. It’s as easy as coffee jello – just fill an ice cube tray with coffee and freeze. When it’s frozen, dump the whole tray into the blender, add one cup of coffee, sugar to taste, milk the way you like it, and blend till the ice cubes are slush. Makes just about enough to fill the big DD Coolatta cup.
I think I’m going to go back and try the Iced Coffee and review it soon. But I’m not sure I’ll make a regular habit of going there again.
I’m going to have to try that recipe soon.
Wow I can’t believe you went back, all though I don’t think I will be having a Coolata from there any time soon.
I really needed coffee, that’s all I’ll say.
I can truthfully say that the only reason I see to go to a DD is for the drive-thru. Here in Seacoast NH there are very few drive-thru coffee joints (Starbucks & DD), so when you have a baby in a carseat, sometimes you just sacrifice quality & taste in favor on convenience!
