Clos Pepe

The Drink: ‘Hula Daddy’ 100% Kona ‘Mele’ Roast from Clos Pepe
Type: Whole Bean
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 cups

Clos Pepe (pronounced with a long ‘o’ and with no ‘s’, like ‘Clo’) is a family owned vineyard and winery in the Santa Rita Hills of Santa Barbara, California. Yes, I said winery. They’re known and recognized for their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but it was their homemade coffee that Wes Hagan, the vineyard manager and winemaker sent me that impressed my taste buds.

In a lot of ways coffee and wine are similar, they both require an almost artistic like process to grow and manufacture. The art of tasting them are very similar too, reaching out to identify the different flavors and aromas. So it’s really no surprise that a quality winery can roast incredible coffee.

The Hula Daddy had a rich aroma, filled with a light cinnamon smell, hints of clover and other spices.

There was an initially nutty taste that was very pronounced, but the overall taste was very smooth. It had a rich buttery taste and feel. There were several different layers of taste, each one complimenting the other.

It’s the type of coffee that I’d want for special occasions, but I could also see myself drinking this every day. Overall, it was an easy four out of five coffee cups rating. I really wish that they would sell this coffee on their website, so that everyone could taste it. However, if their coffee tastes this good, I can only imagine how great their wine tastes.

Visit the Clos Pepe website and learn more about their wines and the process that goes into creating them.

And there you have it-my lifelong dream of owning a winery combined with my love for fresh-roasted coffee…Oh, and Santa Barbara is not too shabby either. =)

Yeah, I imagining it wouldn’t be bad at all.
