What I’m Drinking – Indian Monsoon Malabar

Port City Coffee Roasters - Indian Monson Malabar

The Drink: Indian Monsoon Malabar From Port City Coffee Roasters
Type: Whole Bean
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 cups

I’ve been very fortunate to try some amazing coffees this week, first it was the Kopi Luwak from Rocket Fuel Coffee, today it’s the Indian Monsoon Malabar from Port City Coffee Roasters. It’s definitely not as out there as the Kopi Luwak, but it’s still an all star coffee.

It’s the first time that I’ve ever had coffee from the Malabar region and I really didn’t know what to expect. Tara from Port City Coffee recommended it and after reading their description, I couldn’t wait for it to show up at my house.

Exposure to the Indian Monsoon winds creates a unique, rich, smooth, yet slightly earthy taste in this coffee. It’s a local favorite with low acidity.

After I poured it into my mug today, I smelled a very definite coffee aroma, it wasn’t woody or nutty, it almost reminded me of freshly cut plywood. I know, I’m weird, but that’s what I was getting.

There was a slightly bitter taste to it, but overall it was a very smooth feeling coffee.

The Indian Monsoon Malabar is a light roast with lots of flavor packed into it. There was what I call the green flavors, leaves and peas. Along with hints of chocolate and a slightly salty taste. It even tasted a little like whole wheat bread to me.

It left a slightly dirty feel on my tongue, but don’t worry, it was actually a good thing because I’m talking about the texture more than a taste.

It’s definitely unique and exotic, maybe not as much as the Kopi Luwak, but it’s on different spectrum from a lot of coffees I’ve tasted.

Port City Coffee Roasters say that this type of coffee would be a great dinner or dessert, but I’m going to say that it would make a great tasting coffee all day long.

Plus, it doesn’t hurt that when they say a pound of coffee, they mean it. I know it’s hard to tell in the picture, but this bag was a hefty 16 ounces.  This coffee runs $11.95 a pound and with this size, it’s a bargain.

I gave it a solid four out of five rating. This is my last coffee from Port City Coffee Roasters right now, but I think after my supply of coffee goes down, I’m going to try some more. All of their coffees were top notch and I really have to recommend them to anyone, whether you’re in Portsmouth, New Hampshire or looking for coffee online.

Yes, thank you. I think it really brought out the adventurer in me and I’m looking to explore some other regions that I haven’t tasted yet.
