What I’m Drinking: Starbucks VIA Italian Roast

by Mike on March 31, 2009 in Coffee Reviews

Starbucks VIA Italian RoastTonight, I’m taking a look at the Starbuck’s VIA Italian Roast, an instant coffee that Starbucks just recently released to the market.

This really goes along with the post I did the other day on the VIA Columbia. I swear that I’m going to write about some other kinds of coffee besides Starbucks soon. I drink a lot of other coffees, Starbucks just happened to all over my kitchen right now.

First off, this instant coffee has a beautiful aroma, I can’t call it flavor, because it’s definitely an aroma. As I was pouring the hot water into the cup and stirring, it smelled like a fresh brewed post of coffee. It definitely doesn’t smell like instant coffee and even smells better than the VIA Columbia.

It also has a better taste than the Columbia, but there still is that burnt roast taste, or as they call it “dark roasted.” The burnt taste that I was getting did seem to go away after the coffee cooled down a little.

Overall though, it does have a rich, bold taste that I do like. I’d even go as far as to say that it tastes comparable to some freshly made coffee.

Like the Columbia, it’s a lot better than any other instant coffee that I’ve ever had. It’s perfect for when you need a quick cup to wake you up or your stuck at the office and there’s no Starbucks around the corner. Plus, it’s very easy to make. All you have to do is add hot water and stir. Even I can handle that.

If you want to try it for yourself, you can find it at select Starbucks locations if you’re lucky enough to live in Seattle, Chicago or London. The rest of us can buy it online at the Starbucks website.

I think at some point soon I’ll have to go into the Starbucks down the street from me and try the non-instant versions of these coffees and see how they compare.

Nice review Mike, now you have me wanting to shop for coffee online and order some different types of coffee. Can you recommend any good websites to shop for coffee online?

I can’t really recommend any yet. I’ve bought Starbucks online before, but I’m “researching” others to see what else I can find. Either way, great idea for a blog post!
