What I’m Drinking Venti Cafe Mocha

by Mike on April 14, 2009 in Coffee Reviews

Starbucks Cafe MochaI stopped by Starbucks the other afternoon and even though I had ample amount of time to look at the menu (read; a long line), I still went with an old standby – Venti Cafe Mocha.

I can’t tell you how many times that I’ve ordered Cafe Mochas. Whether, I’m at the airport waiting for a flight or just driving down the street, there’s a good chance that if there’s a Starbucks, I’m getting the Cafe Mocha. It’s probably my favorite Starbucks drink other than the seasonal Peppermint Mocha Twist.

Right away, I realized that I should’ve gone with the iced version because as soon as I walked out the front door and felt the hot Florida sun, I completely felt overheated.

I also shouldn’t have bought the Venti because I knew I would get bored of it before I finish. Halfway through a Venti, it starts to taste bland and loses it’s freshness no matter how quickly you drink it. It’s kind of like going to McDonald’s and super sizing your value meal, you know you shouldn’t do it, but you do order it anyways.

But that’s where the comparisons to McDonalds come to an end. The Starbucks version of a Cafe Mocha actually tastes like a Cafe Mocha, unlike the Mickey D’s imitation version. You can really taste the espresso in it and the taste isn’t overwhelming or overloaded with sugar. Plus, it has a nice, relaxing smooth flavor.

Yes, I know I have a lover afair with the Cafe Mocha.

I’m determined to give another Starbucks creation a chance, but it’s so hard to tear myself away from my beloved Cafe Mocha. Guess, I’ll just have to go back to Starbucks again tomorrow and try again….

The Cafe Mocha is definitely a classic.
What you may not know however is that the chocolate Starbucks uses now, while still good, is different than the original.

Try this the next time your in, order a:

Grande
Whole Milk
Vanilla Mocha

I know its a mouthfull, but the vanilla really brings out the flavor of the chocolate. If your concerned about sugar, know that just saying the above gets 4-pumps mocha and 4-pumps vanilla, so adjust accordingly in your order.

As for the whole milk, espresso flavors (and in fact, most flavors) are fat-soluble. So a richer milk tends to carry the flavors much better. If the sugar and fat sounds like a double-whammy, grab a tall. Like your post says, anything bigger just gets boring towards the end.

Have fun,
John, a Starbucks Barista

Thanks for the suggestion John. I’m definitely going to try that the next time I go to Starbucks. I have a feeling it won’t be long from now.
