Ybor Blend From Ybor City Gold Review

The Drink: Ybor Blend from Ybor City Gold
Type: Whole Bean
Overall Rating: 3.75 Out Of 5 Coffee Mugs

Last weekend, I had enough coffee to get out of bed early and head over to the historic Ybor section of Tampa to check out the farmers’ market. In between the vegetable stands and handmade crafts, I hit gold, the stand for Ybor City Gold. I wanted to try all of their coffees, but I limited myself to just their Ybor Blend to start.

The Ybor Blend is a French Roast blend, that promises a taste of history.

Ybor Blend had an eye opening, dark and smoky scent. Mixed in was a smoked wood aroma, hints of honey and sugar, with drip or two of lime around the edges.

The flavor woke up my mouth. It had a dark roast taste with a deep nutty flavor. There were hints of lime and honey in the taste. A lighter roast came out in the after taste.

This coffee had a rough feeling on my tongue, that just added to the whole experience.

Brewed in a French Press, this coffee had a medium body.

I don’t go to many farmers’ markets, but if they all have coffee like this, I’m going to start going to more of them. Overall, this coffee earned a well above average rating of 3.75 on the Daily Shot Of Coffee rating scale. It’s a dark roast that I really enjoyed because it wasn’t over roasted like so many dark roasts, and instead it was loaded with flavor.

You can find the Ybor City Gold at the Ybor Saturday market every week or online at the Ybor City Gold website. The coffee costs $9.99 for a bag and they do sell cigars too.

What about you? Is there a farmers’ market near you and do they have a coffee stand?

Fine Print.

Gotta love the local stuff! Everytime I turn around I find another local Tampa coffee company. I’m loving it.

I love the farmers’ market although I haven’t seen any coffee vendors at the one in my neighborhood. This coffee sounds good. I like the fact that you said it’s not “over roasted” like other french roasts you’ve had. I tend to think it’s usually over roasted as well. I’ll give this coffee a try.

You’re the king of reviewing small brands and roasters! And $9.99 for a pound is very cheap for coffee. ??? Since it is a French Roast, that is likely the darkest roast that roaster does, which given your description would mean that the roaster under-roasts everything else. Also it is a “blend” and not a single-origin coffee which is much cheaper to produce than a SO. Do you know anything about the sourcing information, or even which growing regions’ coffees were used to create the blend. I would have to assume, at that price point, it is mostly a Latin American blend. It’s very strange that the website for the coffee doesn’t provide any of this information, that I can find.

I’m afraid I don’t know anything about the origin. And you’re right their site doesn’t have a lot of info. I’ve come across a lot of sites that id like to help if I just had more time.

I like how you call it under roasted because I would call it roasted perfectly.

does everyone know it’s EE-borh City?
my cracker friends kidded me endlessly until
i got the hang of it when i went to school in
    the St Pete area.

our local famers mart has a few booths
and vendors who sell hot ‘farmer’ coffee.
it’s not divulged what the beans are and
or from where they are sourced.
that is left to the imagination.

a good number of people who arrive with
a travel mug from home seem to have no
qualms about refills with the ‘farmer’ coffee.

maybe a cupping table would be successful there.

Ill admit that I pronounced it wrong when I first moved here, but somewhere along the line I switched to the right pronounciation.

If you likr the taste of the Ybor Blend fron Ybor Gold Coffee you will love the dark roasted Havana Blend, for cafe con lecha, cappucinno, and ice coffee.

    • Mike says:

I’ll keep an eye out for it.
