You Get Coffee, They Get Clean Water: Coffee For Water

The Drink: Haiti Blend From Coffee for Water
Type: Pre-Ground Blend
Overall Rating: 3.5 Out Of 5 Coffee Mugs

While the headlines surrounding the 2010 Haiti earthquake have faded away, the problems that it created have not. That’s why I’m excited to share with you the Coffee for Water project.

Coffee for water isn’t your average coffee company. They are what they call a “social enterprise” with the mission of protecting children from waterborne diseases. Living in a comfortable country like the United States, it’s easy to forget that the water can actually be dangerous to drink, especially in a country that’s been devastated like Haiti.

Coffee for Water sells coffee grown in Haiti and the profits go to help water purification projects in Haiti and other coffee growing regions. So far they have funded five water purification projects in Haiti and funded a total of 33,881,100 Water Credits (liters of clean water).

In other words it’s an awesome group and they’re doing an awesome job. I couldn’t wait to try their coffee that they’re selling. They sent me a bag of their Haiti Blend, a medium dark roast.

However, my enthusiasm faded a little when I realized that it came pre-ground. That’s a bad thing because coffee starts to go stale within fifteen minutes of being ground and right now they only offer pre-ground coffee.

Of course, I wasn’t going to give up just yet because the coffee was pre-ground. I brewed it in my pour over and here’s the results that I got.

The first thing that my nose noticed was that it wasn’t completely stale yet. It still had an eye opening aroma. It was filled with a wood like scent that reminded me of sawdust from a freshly cut pine tree and a spicy scent that reminded me of cloves.

In the taste department, there was no missing the strong taste, full of flavor. For being such a strong coffee, it had an exceptionally smooth feel. The only thing a little off was that the body of coffee felt really light.

Underneath the strong coffee flavor was a spiciness, this time consisting of cloves, cinnamon and a little bit of nutmeg. There was also a hint of pine/woody flavor.

You can buy 12 ounces of the Hati Blend for $12 on the Coffee for Water website and try it for yourself.

Overall, the Haiti Blend from Coffee for Water earned a 3.5 on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale. I hope at some point they offer a whole bean version. I feel like their could’ve been more to the flavor, like something was missing.

Fine Print.
